Why Is Everyone Talking About CBD?

Be prepared to be blitzed with ads and infomercials about CBD oils, lotions and various other products. This is one of the hottest topics today and everyone is talking about the health benefits of CBD oil and other related products.

So, let's talk about CBD – what is it? Are there different kinds? What kind of health benefits does it have? Here is what you need to know:

What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, an umbrella term for over a hundred chemicals found in the cannabis plant. However, unlike another chemical found in these plants – THC – cannabidiol doesn’t get you high. It comes in many formats from oil to distillate.

Is CBD Cannabis)?

No. CBD is not marijuana. Marijuana is just one of the types of cannabis plants, while CBD is a group of chemicals found in many types of plants. In fact, CBD can be found in plants such as broccoli, flaxseed, black pepper, mangoes, rhododendrons, and many others.

Most of the cannabis-based CBD used in products come from the hemp plant of the cannabis family, and these plants contain less than 0.3% THC (the compound that gives you a high). Marijuana is another type of cannabis plant with much higher levels of THC and is still considered illegal under federal law in the United States, but is now legal in Canada for those who are of the age of majority in their province.

That being said, most of the products on Amazon or storefronts that you hear about are created from hemp-based CBD and not marijuana-based CBD.

Is CBD Just a Fad or Does it Have Real Benefits?

According to AARP, the United States’ largest non-profit and non-partisan organization that is focused on empowering Americans over the age of 50 to live well, CBD is not just a fad and that it does have real health benefits. Here are a few of them:

  1. Pain Relief CBD oil is being used for pain relief from various diseases including the side-effects of cancer. This compound is also helpful in treating inflammations in your body. In fact, researchers believe that CBD could end up being an effective treatment for patients suffering from chronic pain.

  2. Treatment for Mental Health Studies have shown that CBD helps patients suffering from depression and anxiety by reducing their symptoms. Studies are showing that CBD is also effective as an antipsychotic to ease the symptoms of schizophrenia. And according to Dr. Blessings, this treatment is showing significantly fewer side-effects as compared to other drugs.

  3. Age-Related Diseases Other studies show that CBD is also helping people with age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.

  4. Epilepsy and Other Seizures CBD seems to be people who suffer from seizures. In fact, earlier this year, the Food and Drug Administration approved the release of a cannabidiol-based drug to treat severe forms of epilepsy; this new drug is called Epidiolex. This is officially the first-ever government-approved CBD-based drug to be released into the market.

  5. Cancer Treatment CBD is also being seen as a possible treatment for cancer. A study published in 2012 in British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology showed that CBD could actually be an inhibitor of the growth and spread of cancerous cells. The study showed that CBD actually stopped the growth of cancer cells and helped destroy them.

  6. Help with Substance and Alcohol Abuse According to an assistant professor at NYU’s School of Medicine, Dr. Esther Blessing, in the last 50 years, CBD is the most promising drug to emerge for neuropsychiatric diseases. Dr. Blessing is currently carrying out a study on CBD as a treatment for PTSD and Alcohol Use Disorder. According to her research, CBD could really help people with substance abuse issues by reducing withdrawal symptoms and reduce their dependence on such drugs.

When you check the National Institutes of Health's database on clinical trials, there are about 150 different studies in progress at this time that focus on the effect of CBD on different diseases. This research is leading to medicines being created using CBD.

Science has not yet been able to identify why it works, how it works, or even how much should be used to treat various ailments.

What Types of CBD Products are Available in the Market?

You can find CBD in almost all types of products – tinctures, oils, beauty products (such as blemish creams, shampoos, conditioners, eye serums, anti-aging masks, massage oils, soaps, etc.), food, drinks and smoothies, and so on. There are even sexual lubricants laced with CBD on market shelves now!

Where Can You Buy CBD?

Hemp-based CBD can be purchased on Amazon whereas cannabis-based CBD must be purchased from a licensed distributor in Canada.

There are many home-grown CBD solutions that are not very safe and could have serious side effects. So, while you wish to try out natural remedies for your ailments, it is better to be safe and buy your CBD products from trusted sources.
